The colony was strong and growing, so we also created a split — giving the queen and part of her team a new space to continue their work, while the original hive shifts focus to nectar collection.

Kävimme tarkastamassa mehiläispesät iltasella kun saari oli hiljentynyt ja mehiläiset vielä nauttivat kesäisestä ilta-auringosta. Pesissä kävi kuhina kun lentomehiläisetkin olivat palanneet jo päivän lennoiltaan ja koko porukka oli kotona valmistautumassa yöpuulle. Tällä visiitillä tarkastimme pesään karttuneita hunajavarastoja ja otimme tuoreista hunajakennoista näytteet kertomaan kertomaan tietoa keskikesän kukkaloistosta.

Kesän ensimmäiset hunajanäytteet on napattu talteen. Mehiläispesistä kerätään pitkin kesää hunajanäytteitä jotka sisältävät ympäristön kasveista mehiläisten mukana pesään kulkeutunutta DNA-ainesta. Näytteet kertovat meille missä kasveissa mehiläiset ovat lentoretkillään vierailleet ja niistä saadaan tietoa Kaisaniemen lähiluonnon biodiversiteetistä sekä mehiläisille tarjolla olevien ravintokasvien kirjosta.

Today’s inspection included a full round of spring cleaning and a few important updates to support a growing colony.
We installed a new AI base to begin collecting smart hive data for the season, and added a third box on top — giving the bees more space to expand, as the hive is already looking strong and well populated.
Everything’s in place for a productive season ahead. 🐝🌱

The hive is thriving: strong, active, and full of summer energy.
One full box of honey has already been collected, and a small split was made with the queen to support a new colony. The original hive was left with swarm cells, and a third box was added to give the bees space to continue building.
Everything is moving with the rhythm of the season. 🐝

Terveisiä mehiläisiltä! Pesässä on hyvä pörinä päällä ja mehiläiset ovat keränneet varastoon paljon siitepölyä josta ne valmistavat ruokaa pikkutoukille. Tällä visiitillä otimme pesästä myös ensimmäisen hunajanäytteen josta selviää alkukesänä lähialueella kukkivien mehiläisten ravintokasvien kirjo.

Our bees are making the most of the season, busily collecting nectar and pollen from blooming canola fields nearby. This bright yellow crop is a favourite among foragers, because it’s rich in resources that help fuel hive growth and honey production.
We'll be keeping an eye on their progress as the season continues to unfold.

Pesän asukkaat paistattelivat tyytyväisinä auringossa ja olivat hyvin rentoja koko pesäkäynnin ajan. Kuningatar on muninut ahkerasti eli yhdyskunnan koko senkun kasvaa.

Kesäkuun alussa pesässä käy kova kuhina kun kun emo munii uusia työläisiä ja nuoret pesämehiläiset rakentavat ahkerasti kennostoa johon kesän hunajasatoa aletaan varastoimaan.
Mehiläismäärä ensimmäisessä pesässä on kehittynyt jo siihen mittaan että osa mehiläisistä voidaan siirtää kuningattaren kanssa toiseen pesälaatikkoon ja näin pesissä riittää tila taas paremmin kasvavan yhdyskunnan tarpeisiin. 🐝

Tämänpäiväisellä mehiläispesävisiitillä täytimme mehiläisten juoma-baarin vedellä ja lisäsimme toiseen pesään uuden laatikon tuomaan lisätilaa kasvavalle mehiläisyhdyskunnalle.
Mehiläiset olivat oikein aktiivisia ja pesän populaatio kasvaa ilahduttavaa tahtia 🐝
