Katolla on hyvin rauhallinen pesä, jossa emo munii ja hiljalleen mehiläiset keräävät myös hunajaa. Sateisen päivän jälkeen pesässä oli paljon mehiläisiä.

The hive was calm and content during the latest visit — bees basking in the sunshine, moving gently across the frames.

The queen has been laying steadily, and the colony continues to grow with strength and rhythm. The brood — the area where new bees develop — was solid and uniform, a sign of a healthy and well-functioning hive.

Today we collected a honey sample to track the surrounding’s biodiversity.

The colony was strong and growing, so we also created a split — giving the queen and part of her team a new space to continue their work, while the original hive shifts focus to nectar collection.

A steady rhythm, and all signs of a healthy hive. 🐝

This week, we collected the first honey sample for the eDNA analysis, a method that helps us uncover which plants your bees have been foraging on. This sample will be giving us a glimpse into the biodiversity of the Ruoholahti area this month.

During the check-up, the temperature was a mild 16°C. One hive is thriving with 20 frames of bees, while the second is steadily expanding with 8 frames.

The bees are doing their part in mapping the surrounding nature and gathering sweet nectar.

The queen had been busy as a bee and the population was strong enough to make the mid summer split. The queen was moved to another beehive with her entourage and plenty of pollen and nectar stores.

The workers of the original hive are now switching to full honey collection mode as we are nearing the main nectar flow period of the summer.

This week, the rooftop welcomed its newest residents. The hive was installed with care, and the bees wasted no time settling in, already beginning to explore their new surroundings in the spring light.

Inside the hive, the queen is getting to work, and the workers are setting the rhythm for the season ahead. With early blooms in reach and plenty of space to grow, everything is in place for a strong start.

Clear skies and 22°C made for ideal conditions during this week’s hive inspection.

The larger colony is now covering 20 frames — a strong population for early July and a clear sign that the bees are thriving. The second colony, a few weeks behind, has reached 10 frames, showing steady growth and good activity across the hive.

Both colonies were calm during the visit, focused on their work. We’re seeing healthy development in both hives, with the bees expanding their space and continuing to collect nectar and pollen.

The rooftop is now home to not just one, but two buzzing colonies! 🐝🐝
During today’s check-up, with a mild 18°C and cloudy skies, we were greeted by plenty of bee activity.

In one of the hives, the bees were spread across 13 frames — a strong sign of a healthy, growing colony for this point in the season. The second hive, a bit newer, had 8 frames, which is a good start for a younger colony still settling in.

We welcomed visitors to the rooftop for a special hive visit. Together, we explored the incredible world of bees and their vital role in our ecosystems.

From pollination to honey production, the bees gave us plenty to admire — and we’re so grateful to everyone who joined with curiosity and enthusiasm to learn more about these tiny heroes.

Stay tuned as the season unfolds. The hive is just getting started!

The hive is thriving: strong, active, and full of summer energy.

One full box of honey has already been collected, and a small split was made with the queen to support a new colony. The original hive was left with swarm cells, and a third box was added to give the bees space to continue building.

Everything is moving with the rhythm of the season. 🐝

The queen is in full laying mode, and the colony is expanding quickly with the longer days and slowly rising temperatures. Forager bees are busy visiting lilacs, tulips, and majestic chestnut trees, among other blooms. They’re focused on bringing nectar and pollen back to fuel hive growth.

This is a peak moment in the season: we’re adding space to the hives as needed and keeping a close eye out for signs of swarming. Everything is in motion, and your bees are actively supporting biodiversity in your local environment.

We’ll keep you posted on how things are buzzing at the hive!

Today’s inspection included a full round of spring cleaning and a few important updates to support a growing colony.

We installed a new AI base to begin collecting smart hive data for the season, and added a third box on top — giving the bees more space to expand, as the hive is already looking strong and well populated.

Everything’s in place for a productive season ahead. 🐝🌱

Kesäkuun lopussa kuningatar siirrettiin pienen seurueen kanssa viereiseen mehiläispesään rakentamaan uutta yhdyskuntaa sillä aikaa kun alkuperäisen pesän työmehiläiset valmistautuvat keräämään hunajasatoa. Näin saadaan minimoitua parveilun riski kun kuningattarella riittää taas hyvin tilaa munia ja toisessa pesässä mehiäiset saavat huoletta täyttää varastoja hunajalla.
